Skinbetter AlphaRet: Which One Is Right for You?
Skinbetter's AlphaRet is one of the most-asked-about products in my studio. It's a retinoid that's easier to live with than most, and it comes in so many versions that choosing one gets confusing. Here's how they differ.
What makes AlphaRet different
Most retinoids cause the redness, peeling and dryness people dread. AlphaRet pairs a retinoid with an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) in one molecule, which Skinbetter designed to deliver results with less irritation. In practice, my clients tolerate it far better than the retinoids they've tried before.
Retinoids are one of the most researched ingredients in skincare for fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture and tone.
Which AlphaRet should you choose?
Start a professional routine: A-Team Duo Kit ($185)
Treat deeper wrinkles: Intensive AlphaRet ($145)
Clear breakouts and pores: AlphaRet Clearing Serum ($26–$145)
Smooth the eye area: EyeMax AlphaRet Overnight Cream ($45–$120)
Get an at-home peel: AlphaRet Exfoliating Peel Pads ($125)
Treat rough or crepey body skin: AlphaRet Body Overnight Cream ($120)
A-Team Duo. If you're new to Skinbetter, start here. It pairs AlphaRet Overnight Cream with Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum, an antioxidant for daytime. One works at night, the other protects during the day.
Intensive AlphaRet. A stronger nighttime cream for people already using a retinoid who want more visible wrinkle reduction.
AlphaRet Clearing Serum. Made for oily, blemish-prone skin. It adds salicylic acid to help with clarity and the look of pores. The 5 ml travel size is a low-cost way to try it.
EyeMax AlphaRet. Eye skin is thin and reacts easily. This version is formulated specifically for crow's feet and under-eye texture.
AlphaRet Peel Pads. Pre-soaked pads with AlphaRet plus glycolic, lactic and salicylic acids. I recommend them between professional peels to keep results going.
AlphaRet Body Overnight Cream. For arms, legs and chest, where skin can look rough or crepey. It's not meant for the face.
How to start AlphaRet
Use it 2–3 nights a week for the first two weeks, then build up to nightly.
Apply to dry skin after cleansing, then follow with moisturizer.
Wear sunscreen every morning, since retinoids make skin more sensitive to sun.
Stop using it a few days before a peel or microneedling, and ask me when to restart.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Skip retinoids and ask me about alternatives.
