The Best Dark Spot Serums, Picked by a Henderson Esthetician

Dark spots are the number one concern I hear about in my Henderson treatment room. Between the desert sun, old breakouts and hormones, almost everyone has some uneven tone they want gone.

The good news: professional brightening serums can make a visible difference. The catch is that drugstore products rarely use strong enough ingredients, and the wrong serum can irritate skin and make discoloration worse. Here's how I choose between the four I carry.

First, know what kind of dark spot you have

  • Sun spots are flat brown spots on the cheeks, forehead and hands from years of UV exposure.

  • Post-breakout marks are the red, brown or purple spots left behind after a pimple heals.

  • Melasma shows up as larger patches, often on the upper lip, cheeks and forehead. Hormones and heat make it worse, which is why it's so common in Las Vegas.

All three respond to brightening ingredients. Melasma also needs gentle handling, because irritation can make it flare.

The serums I recommend

Skinbetter Even Tone Correcting Serum: the everyday starting point. It's my go-to for most people starting a brightening routine. It's gentle enough for daily use, and it comes in a travel size so you can try it first.

Skinbetter Even Intensive Skin Tone Correcting Serum: for stubborn spots. This is the next step up. It adds AHAs to resurface along with brightening technology, which helps with spots that haven't budged with other products.

PCA Pigment Gel Pro: for sensitive skin. PCA lists it for every skin type, including sensitive, so it's the one I reach for when someone's skin reacts easily.

Hydrinity Vivid Brightening Serum: brightening plus hydration. If your skin is both dull and dry, this one fades pigmentation while adding moisture, so skin looks more radiant overall.

The step that makes or breaks your results

No serum works if you skip sunscreen. UV exposure darkens spots again every single day, and the Las Vegas sun is strong year-round. Pair any of these serums with a mineral SPF like Skinbetter Tone Smart SPF 75, and reapply when you're outdoors. My mineral sunscreen guide has more picks.

When a serum isn't enough

Deeper or older pigmentation often needs professional treatment alongside your home routine. I combine brightening serums with chemical peels for clients who want faster, more dramatic results.
